2 Peter 2:1

 Here’s 2 Peter 2:1 in a few translations:

  • KJV: “But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.”

  • ESV: “But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.”

  • NIV: “But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves.”

Explanation

This verse is Peter’s warning about false teachers who would infiltrate the church.

  1. “False prophets among the people”

    • Refers back to Israel’s history, where false prophets constantly misled the people (Jeremiah 23, Ezekiel 13).

    • Just as Israel was plagued by deception, the church will face it too.

  2. “False teachers among you”

    • Unlike false prophets (who claimed divine revelation), false teachers twist doctrine inside the church.

    • They arise within the community of believers, making them more dangerous than external enemies.

  3. “Who privily shall bring in damnable heresies”

    • They work secretly, subtly introducing destructive teachings.

    • “Heresies” = teachings that oppose the truth of Christ and lead to ruin.

  4. “Even denying the Lord that bought them”

    • Their greatest error: rejecting or distorting Christ Himself.

    • “Bought them” = Christ’s redemptive work on the cross.

    • This could mean:

      • They deny His lordship (refuse to submit to Him).

      • They deny His deity, humanity, or sacrificial work.

  5. “Bring upon themselves swift destruction”

    • Though their deception may last for a time, God’s judgment will fall quickly when it comes.

In summary:
2 Peter 2:1 warns that false teachers will rise inside the church, secretly spreading destructive teachings that deny Christ. Though they may deceive many, their end is certain judgment.
