Matthew 24:24

 Here’s Matthew 24:24 in a few translations:

  • KJV: “For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.”

  • ESV: “For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.”

  • NIV: “For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.”

Explanation

This verse is part of Jesus’ Olivet Discourse, where He describes the events before His return.

  1. “False Christs, and false prophets”

    • Refers to people who claim to be the Messiah or speak with prophetic authority but are impostors.

    • History records several such figures (both in the 1st century and throughout church history), but Jesus warns of more to come, especially before the end.

  2. “Shall shew great signs and wonders”

    • These false leaders won’t just speak—many will demonstrate supernatural-looking powers to gain credibility.

    • Revelation 13:13–14 describes the false prophet calling fire down from heaven to deceive people.

  3. “Insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect”

    • The “elect” refers to God’s chosen people, true believers.

    • Jesus emphasizes how convincing these deceptions will be.

    • The phrase “if it were possible” suggests that though the deception is extremely strong, God will keep His elect from ultimately falling away (see John 10:27–29; Romans 8:30).

In summary:
Matthew 24:24 is a sobering warning that in the last days, deception will be powerful and persuasive, even appearing miraculous. But true believers—the elect—are kept by God’s grace and will not be finally deceived, though they must remain vigilant.
