Luke 21:36
Here’s Luke 21:36 in a few major translations for clarity:
-
KJV: “Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.”
-
ESV: “But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”
-
NIV: “Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.”
Explanation
This verse comes near the end of Jesus’ Olivet Discourse (Luke 21, Matthew 24, Mark 13) where He describes the signs of the end times, coming tribulations, and His second coming.
-
“Watch ye therefore” – Jesus commands vigilance, meaning spiritual alertness, discernment, and awareness of the times. Believers must not be lulled into carelessness by worldly distractions.
-
“Pray always” – Prayer is the believer’s lifeline in times of trial. Continuous prayer keeps the heart aligned with God and strengthens faith when the world shakes.
-
“That ye may be accounted worthy to escape” – This has been interpreted in two main ways:
-
Protection through trials – God’s grace helps believers endure and remain faithful amid persecution and tribulation.
-
Escape from trials – Some see this as a reference to being spared (such as the rapture view), escaping the full weight of judgment on the world.
-
-
“And to stand before the Son of Man” – Ultimately, the goal is not just escaping troubles, but standing justified before Christ when He returns as Judge and King. Standing implies being accepted, unashamed, and faithful in His presence.
