Revelation 2:4 (KJV):

 Revelation 2:4 (KJV):

"Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love."

Context of Revelation 2:4

This verse is part of Jesus' message to the church in Ephesus, recorded in Revelation 2:1-7. Jesus commends the Ephesians for their hard work, perseverance, and resistance to false teachings. However, He rebukes them for losing their first love—their initial devotion and passion for Him.

Meaning of "First Love"

  1. A Loss of Passion for Christ – The Ephesians were doctrinally sound and active in ministry, but their love for Jesus had grown cold.
  2. Relationship Over Routine – They were busy doing good works but had forgotten their deep, personal love for God.
  3. A Warning for All Believers – It is possible to be outwardly faithful while drifting inwardly from God.

How to Restore the First Love (Revelation 2:5)

In the next verse, Jesus gives the solution:

  • "Remember" – Reflect on the love and devotion you once had.
  • "Repent" – Turn back to Jesus and rekindle your passion for Him.
  • "Do the first works" – Return to prayer, worship, and devotion with a sincere heart.

Application for Us Today

  • Examine your spiritual life—is your love for Jesus as strong as before?
  • Avoid becoming religious without relationship—Christianity is about loving Christ, not just following rules.
  • Seek daily renewal in prayer, worship, and studying God's Word to stay connected with Him.
