The Divine Attributes of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit possesses divine attributes that belong only to God: Omniscience (All-Knowing), Omnipresence (Everywhere-Present), and Omnipotence (All-Powerful).

1. Omniscience (All-Knowing)

The Holy Spirit knows everything, including the thoughts of God and the deepest things of creation.

Key Scriptures:

  • 1 Corinthians 2:10-11 – "But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God."

    • The Spirit has full knowledge of God’s mind, which only God can have.

  • John 14:26 – "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you."

    • The Holy Spirit teaches all things, showing He has complete knowledge.

  • Isaiah 40:13-14 – "Who has directed the Spirit of the Lord, or as His counselor has taught Him? With whom did He take counsel, and who instructed Him...?"

    • No one can teach the Holy Spirit because He already knows everything.

Implication: The Holy Spirit can guide us perfectly because He knows all things, even our hearts and the future.

2. Omnipresence (Everywhere-Present)

The Holy Spirit is present everywhere at the same time, which only God can be.

Key Scriptures:

  • Psalm 139:7-10 – "Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there."

    • The Spirit is present in heaven, earth, and the grave, proving His omnipresence.

  • John 14:16-17 – "And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—the Spirit of truth... He dwells with you and will be in you."

    • The Spirit is with all believers at the same time, no matter where they are.

Implication: No one can hide from the Spirit of God, and He is always with us, no matter where we go.

3. Omnipotence (All-Powerful)

The Holy Spirit has the same power as God to create, give life, and perform miracles.

Key Scriptures:

  • Job 33:4 – "The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life."

    • The Holy Spirit is directly involved in creation and giving life.

  • Genesis 1:2 – "The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters."

    • The Spirit was present at creation, actively shaping the world.

  • Romans 8:11 – "But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies."

    • The Holy Spirit raised Jesus from the dead, showing He has resurrection power.

Implication: The Spirit has the power to create, sustain, and resurrect life. If He raised Jesus from the dead, He can give us new life as well.
