The Holy Spirit is God

The Holy Spirit is God

1. Acts 5:3-4 – Lying to the Holy Spirit is Lying to God

This is one of the clearest passages affirming the Holy Spirit’s divinity.

  • Verse 3: "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself?"

  • Verse 4: "You have not lied to men but to God."

Here, Peter first states that Ananias lied to the Holy Spirit, and then immediately clarifies that he lied to God. This direct equivalence shows that the Holy Spirit is God.

2. 2 Corinthians 3:17-18 – The Spirit is the Lord

  • Verse 17: "Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty."

  • Verse 18: "...this comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit."

Paul explicitly states that "the Lord is the Spirit," showing that the Holy Spirit is not a separate lesser being but fully divine.

3. The Holy Spirit is Called "God’s Spirit" in a Personal Way

  • Matthew 10:20 – "For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you."

  • 1 Corinthians 6:19 – "Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God?"

The fact that our bodies are called the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 6:19) is significant because in the Old Testament, only God dwelled in the temple. Since the Holy Spirit dwells in believers, this confirms that He is fully God.

Implications of the Holy Spirit’s Divinity

  1. He deserves our worship – Since the Holy Spirit is God, we should honor Him as we do the Father and the Son.

  2. He has authority in our lives – Rejecting or grieving the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30) is serious because it is resisting God.

  3. He empowers and transforms us – Since He is God, He has the power to sanctify, guide, and strengthen us.
