The Personhood of the Holy Spirit

The Personhood of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is not just an impersonal force or power but a divine Person with intellect, will, and emotions. He speaks, teaches, guides, and has a relationship with believers.

1. The Holy Spirit Speaks and Calls (Acts 13:2)

"As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’”

  • The Holy Spirit spoke directly, giving a clear command.

  • He said, “I have called them,” showing that He makes decisions and has a will.

  • Only a person, not a mere force, can issue a personal calling and command.

2. The Holy Spirit Teaches and Reminds (John 14:26)

"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you."

  • The Holy Spirit is called the Helper (Parakletos), which means advocate, counselor, or comforter—a term that implies personhood.

  • He teaches believers, which requires intelligence and intention.

  • He reminds them of Jesus’ words, showing His active role in guiding believers.

Other Scriptures that Show the Holy Spirit’s Personhood

  1. He Has a Mind (Intellect)

    • Romans 8:27 – "Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is."

  2. He Has Emotions

    • Ephesians 4:30 – "And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God."

    • Only a person can feel grief, showing that the Spirit has emotions.

  3. He Has a Will

    • 1 Corinthians 12:11 – "But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills."

    • The Spirit makes decisions about spiritual gifts, which requires a personal will.

  4. He Guides and Speaks

    • John 16:13 – "He will guide you into all truth... He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak."

    • The Spirit actively guides, speaks, and reveals truth, which are personal actions.

Conclusion

The Holy Spirit is not just a force but a living, divine Person who:
Speaks and calls (Acts 13:2)
Teaches and reminds (John 14:26)
Has a mind, emotions, and will (Romans 8:27, Ephesians 4:30, 1 Corinthians 12:11)
Guides and speaks (John 16:13)

Because the Holy Spirit is a Person, we can have a relationship with Him—listening, obeying, and being led by Him daily.
