Business is God's Idea:

Business is God’s Idea, Not a Sin

Key Scripture: Matthew 25:14-30 (The Parable of the Talents)

Introduction

Many people think business is only about making money and that being rich is sinful. However, the Bible teaches that business is God’s idea and a way to steward resources, serve others, and glorify Him. Throughout Scripture, we see godly men and women involved in business and using their resources to fulfill God’s purposes.

1. God Owns Everything, and We Are Stewards

📖 Psalm 24:1"The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it."

🔹 Biblical Example: Joseph in Egypt (Genesis 41:39-57)

  • God gave Joseph wisdom to manage Egypt’s economy during famine.
  • He stored grain and sold it wisely, preventing starvation.
  • Lesson: Business is a way of managing God’s blessings and preparing for the future.

🔹 Modern Example: A Christian farmer

  • A Christian farmer grows crops and sells them at a fair price.
  • His business feeds families and provides jobs.
  • Lesson: Business is not just about money but about blessing others.

2. God Expects Growth and Multiplication

📖 Matthew 25:16-17"The one who had received five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five more talents. Likewise, the one with two talents made two more."

🔹 Biblical Example: Lydia, the seller of purple cloth (Acts 16:14-15)

  • Lydia was a businesswoman dealing in expensive fabrics.
  • She used her wealth to support Paul’s ministry.
  • Lesson: Business helps expand God’s Kingdom when done with the right heart.

🔹 Modern Example: Christian entrepreneurs

  • Many business owners use their profits to support missions, churches, and the poor.
  • Some give scholarships, build hospitals, or feed orphans.
  • Lesson: God blesses those who use their businesses for good purposes.

3. Fear and Laziness Lead to Loss

📖 Matthew 25:24-25"I was afraid and went and hid your talent in the ground."

🔹 Biblical Example: The widow’s oil (2 Kings 4:1-7)

  • A widow was in debt and about to lose her sons.
  • The prophet Elisha told her to sell oil and pay her debt.
  • Lesson: Instead of waiting for a miracle, she worked and saw God’s provision.

🔹 Modern Example: A struggling businessman who gives up

  • Some people fear failure and never take risks.
  • Others start but don’t work hard and their business fails.
  • Lesson: God wants us to trust Him, work hard, and not waste opportunities.

4. Business Can Bless Others and Glorify God

📖 Proverbs 11:26"People curse the one who hoards grain, but they pray God’s blessing on the one who is willing to sell."

🔹 Biblical Example: Boaz, the businessman (Ruth 2-4)

  • Boaz was a wealthy landowner who ran his farm with integrity.
  • He helped the poor (Ruth and Naomi) and later became an ancestor of Jesus.
  • Lesson: Business should be about fairness, generosity, and helping others.

🔹 Modern Example: A Christian shop owner

  • A Christian runs a grocery store and gives discounts to the needy.
  • He treats his employees fairly and doesn’t cheat customers.
  • Lesson: Business should be done with honesty and love.

5. Money is a Tool, Not a Sin

📖 1 Timothy 6:10"The love of money is the root of all evil."
📖 Deuteronomy 8:18"Remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth."

🔹 Biblical Example: Abraham, a wealthy businessman (Genesis 13:2)

  • Abraham was very rich in livestock, silver, and gold.
  • Yet, he was faithful to God and willing to give up anything for Him.
  • Lesson: Wealth is not evil, but it must be used wisely.

🔹 Modern Example: A Christian investor

  • A Christian invests wisely and becomes wealthy.
  • He uses his money to build churches, schools, and hospitals.
  • Lesson: God blesses those who use wealth for His glory.

Conclusion: Business is a Divine Opportunity

  • Business is not sin, but a God-given way to steward resources, bless others, and glorify Him.
  • Like the faithful servants, we must use our talents wisely and multiply what God has given us.
  • Final Question: Are you using your business, job, or skills for God’s glory?
