Strategic Planning (Nehemiah 2:9-­20)

And I told them of the hand of my God which had been good upon me, and also of the king's words that he had spoken to me. So they said, "Let us rise up and build." Then they set their hands to this good work. (v.18)

God is calling us to be spiritual leaders. Whether it is in our home, church, workplace, or anywhere else, we are called to lead our lives in such a way that others want to follow. As leaders, we are called to be strategic planners, with God as our focus. Our passage today relays the story of Nehemiah and his leadership. Through his example, we can learn how to be God-centered, prepared leaders.

1. The Welcome (vv. 9, 10). Nehemiah and a small band of associates traveled under military escort. The entourage wasn't as much for protection as it was to impress onlookers with the obvious credentials and backing of the king. Nehemiah was welcomed with harsh opposition from Sanballat and Tobiah. Both these men were powerful and were related to the high priest's family (Nehemiah 13:4-28). Extra-biblical sources confirm Sanballat was governor of Samaria and Tobiah was likely governor of Ammon. They were disturbed (v. 10) that Jerusalem might be restored, so these neighboring nations were hostile toward them. Hostility is a real part of leading a Godly life and leading others in His ways. Are you facing hostility? At school, do others make fun of you for being in the youth group or for holding prayer meetings? To your fellow workers scowl when you speak of the Lord? Has the enemy interfered with your daily time with the Lord? We are all faced with opposition when we follow the Lord. How do you face opposition?

2. The Survey (vv. 11­16). Upon arrival, Nehemiah did not rush into action, but rested for three days. Then, he covertly inspected the situation. Nehemiah said in these verses that he did not disclose his plans to anyone, not to the enemies nor to his fellow workers, until he had accurate information. His route is traced in these verses. If seen on a map, this trek proved to be a thorough assessment of the city's condition. How often we as Christians run blindly into ministry, as if it is random or mindless! Jesus, when speaking about ministry, said, "What king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?" (Luke 14:31). We are to be, "... wise as serpents and harmless as doves" (Matthew 10:16).

3. The Report (vv. 17, 18). Nehemiah exposed the negative situation: the land was desolate and the gates were burned. Then he reported the positive, "And I told them of the hand of my God which had been good upon me, and also of the king's words that he had spoken to me..." (v.18). After the reminder of God's goodness, the people responded positively. Do we as God's people get discouraged too easily? We're to focus on God's promises and believe.

4. The Opposition (vv.19, 20). Now a third enemy entered the picture, Geshem. Some scholars feel he was the most powerful of all the opponents. He and his son ruled a confederacy of Arabian tribes that were in control of Moab and Edom. Surrounded with opposition, Nehemiah's answer was, "The God of heaven Himself will prosper us; therefore we His servants will arise and build ..." (v. 20). Notice he did not say "King Artaxerxes will wipe you out if you mess with us." No, his faith was in the God of heaven! He continued, telling them, "... you have no heritage or right or memorial in Jerusalem" (v. 20). Imagine, Jerusalem was in rubble and yet he boasted that the Lord would fulfill His promise!

It's been said that God never gives His people tasks they can fulfill on their own. We will find ourselves in positions to glorify the Lord in such incredible ways that we don't believe they are possible. However, these are the very plans the Lord has for us. We will encounter hostility, we will have to survey and plan, and we will have to persuade others to continue in faith. If we, like Nehemiah, have an unshakable faith and commitment to God's promises, we will see incredible fulfillment, not only rebuilding a wall or a city, but also bringing nations to faith in Jesus Christ!

Nehemiah did not believe in a one-man ministry; he challenged the leaders of the remnant to work with him (not for him) in repairing the walls. What was the motive? "That we may no longer be a reproach"(v. 17). He was concerned with the glory of God as well as the good of the nation. However, as a leader in this ministry, certainly he faced battles as we will. At least four battles face every leader:

1. Battle with self: doubt, fear, impatience, etc.

2. Battle with the mission: concerns about impossibility, timetables, cost, etc.

3. Battle with those you will lead.

4. Battle with the enemy.

I often wonder if there is a sequential connection. The better I can overcome the battle with myself and my mission, the better I'll lead others and face the enemy. Or perhaps it is reversed: the better I lead others and face the enemy, the easier it will be to overcome my insecurities or doubts about God's mission for me. In any case, we should be ready for these battles and face them with faith. As we face opposition, as did Nehemiah, there is an important principle to remember: never forget God's faithfulness in your life. Nehemiah reported the tragedy (v. 17) but he quickly informed the leaders how God had made Him successful up to that point (v. 18). 

My wife has reminded me of this more vividly than anyone has. She says, "Sure, we're going to struggle. Sure, we'll have sickness. Sure, we're going to watch our kids do some things we wish they wouldn't, but we must look back and remember the good hand of God in our lives and go forward in faith."

We must understand that the walk of faith is just that—a walk. Its is a progressive journey with Jesus as our guide. The singer/song writer Pastor Anand Kumar Prasad and his wife Nilu beautifully capture this this truth one of his famous songs:

परमेश्वर हमें आध्यात्मिक अगुआ होने के लिए बुला रहे हैं। चाहे वह हमारे घर में हो, चर्च मे हो, कार्यस्थल, या कहीं और मे हो, हमें अपने जीवन का नेतृत्व इस तरह से करने के लिए कहा जाता है, जिसे देख कर लोग हमें पालन करें । नेताओं के रूप में, हमें रणनीतिक योजनाकार कहा जाता है, हमारा ध्यान परमेश्वर के रूप में है। हमारा मार्ग आज नहेमायाह और उसके नेतृत्व की कहानी से संबंधित है। उनके उदाहरण के माध्यम से, हम सीख सकते हैं परमेश्वर को हमारे बीच में रख के, सेवकों को तैयार  कैसे हों।

1. स्वागत में (v.9, 10)। नहेमायाह और उनके सहयोगियों के एक छोटे से दल ने सैन्य अनुरक्षण के तहत यात्रा की। यह संरक्षण राजा के संरक्षण और समर्थन के लिए उतना नहीं था जितना कि राजा के समर्थन और विश्वास के साथ दर्शकों को प्रभावित करना। नेहमीया का स्वागत सनबलत और तोबिया के कठोर विरोध के साथ किया गया था। ये दोनों व्यक्ति शक्तिशाली थे और महायाजक के परिवार से संबंधित थे (नहेमायाह 13: 4-28)। अति-बाइबिल के स्रोत इस बात की पुष्टि करते हैं कि सैनबालैट सामरिया का गवर्नर था और टोबियाह अम्मोन का गवर्नर था। वे परेशान थे (v.10) कि यरूशलेम को बहाल किया जाए, इसलिए ये पड़ोसी देश उनके प्रति शत्रुतापूर्ण थे। शत्रुता एक ईश्वरीय जीवन का नेतृत्व करने और अपने तरीकों से दूसरों का नेतृत्व करने का एक वास्तविक हिस्सा है। क्या आप शत्रुता का सामना कर रहे हैं? स्कूल में, अन्य लोग युवा समूह में होने या प्रार्थना सभा आयोजित करने के लिए आपका मज़ाक उड़ाते हैं? जब आप यहोवा की बात करते हैं, तो आपके साथी मजदूरों को डांटते हैं? क्या शत्रु ने प्रभु के साथ आपके दैनिक समय में हस्तक्षेप किया है? जब हम परमेश्वर का अनुसरण करते हैं तो हम सभी को विरोध का सामना करना पड़ता है। आपको विरोध का सामना कैसे करना पड़ेगा?

2. सर्वेक्षण में (v.11, 16)। आगमन के बाद, नहेमायाह ने हरकत में नहीं आया, लेकिन तीन दिनों तक आराम किया। फिर, उन्होंने गुप्त रूप से स्थिति का निरीक्षण किया। नहेमायाह ने इन आयतों में कहा कि उसने अपनी योजनाओं का खुलासा किसी से भी नहीं किया, न दुश्मनों से और न ही अपने साथी कामगारों से, जब तक उन्हें सही जानकारी नहीं थी। इन छंदों में उनके मार्ग का पता लगाया जाता है। यदि मानचित्र पर देखा जाए तो यह ट्रेक शहर की स्थिति का गहन मूल्यांकन साबित हुआ। कितनी बार हम ईसाई के रूप में मंत्रालय में आँख बंद करके चलते हैं, जैसे कि यह यादृच्छिक या नासमझ है! यीशु ने, जब मंत्रालय के बारे में बात करते हुए कहा, "क्या राजा, दूसरे राजा के खिलाफ युद्ध करने जा रहा है, वे पहले बैठता है और विचार करता है कि क्या वह दस हजार के साथ सक्षम है जो उसके विरुद्ध में आता है जो उसके खिलाफ बीस हजार के साथ आता है?" (लूका 14:31)। हम हैं, "... नागों के तरह बुद्धिमान और कबूतर की तरह  हानिरहित" (मत्ती 10:16)।

3. रिपोर्ट में (v.17, 18) । नहेमायाह ने नकारात्मक स्थिति को उजागर किया: भूमि उजाड़ दी गई और द्वार जला दिए गए। फिर उसने सकारात्मक सूचना दी, "और मैंने उन्हें अपने परमेश्वर के हाथ के बारे में बताया जो मुझ पर अच्छा था, और राजा के उन शब्दों के बारे में भी जो उन्होंने मुझसे बोले थे ..." (v.18) । परमेश्वर की भलाई की याद दिलाने के बाद, लोगों ने सकारात्मक प्रतिक्रिया दी। क्या हम परमेश्वर के लोगों को बहुत आसानी से हतोत्साहित करते हैं? हम परमेश्वर के वादों और विश्वास पर ध्यान करते रहना हैं।

4. विपक्ष (v.19, 20) । अब एक तीसरा दुश्मन, गेशम में प्रवेश किया। कुछ विद्वानों का मानना ​​है कि वह सभी विरोधियों में सबसे शक्तिशाली थे। उसने और उसके बेटे ने अरब जनजातियों की एक संघशासन पर शासन किया जो मोआब और एदोम के नियंत्रण में थे। विरोध से घिरे, नहेमायाह का जवाब था, "स्वर्ग का परमेश्वर स्वयं हमें समृद्ध करेगा; इसलिए हम उसके सेवक पैदा करेंगे और उसका निर्माण करेंगे ..." यह कहा गया है कि परमेश्वर कभी भी अपने लोगों को ऐसे कार्य नहीं देते हैं जिन्हें वे अपने दम पर पूरा कर सकें। हम खुद को परमेश्वर के ऐसे अविश्वसनीय तरीकों से महिमामंडित करने की स्थिति में पाएंगे कि हमें विश्वास नहीं होता कि वे संभव हैं। हालाँकि, ये वही योजनाएँ हैं जो परमेश्वर ने हमारे लिए बनाई हैं। हम शत्रुता का सामना करेंगे, हमें सर्वेक्षण करना होगा और योजना बनानी होगी, और हमें दूसरों को विश्वास में बने रहने के लिए राजी करना होगा। अगर हम नहेमायाह की तरह, परमेश्वर के वादों के बारे में एक अटूट विश्वास और प्रतिबद्धता रखते हैं, तो हम अविश्वसनीय पूर्णता देखेंगे, न केवल एक दीवार या शहर का पुनर्निर्माण करेंगे, बल्कि हर एक जातियों को यीशु मसीह में विश्वास में लाएंगे!

नहेमायाह को एक-व्यक्ति सेवकाई में विश्वास नहीं था; उन्होंने अवशेष के नेताओं को चुनौती दी कि वे उनके साथ काम करें (उनके लिए नहीं) दीवारों की मरम्मत में। मकसद क्या था? "कि अब हम कोई भर्त्सना नहीं कर सकते" (v.17) । वह परमेश्वर की महिमा के साथ-साथ राष्ट्र की भलाई से चिंतित था। हालांकि, इस सेवकाई में एक नेता के रूप में, निश्चित रूप से उन्होंने लड़ाई का सामना किया जैसा कि हम करेंगे। हर सेवक पर कम से कम चार लड़ाइयाँ होती हैं:

3. उन लोगों के साथ लड़ाई जो आप अगुवाई करते हैं।

4. दुश्मन से लड़ाई।

मुझे अक्सर आश्चर्य होता है कि क्या कोई अनुक्रमिक संबंध है। जितना बेहतर मैं अपने और अपने लक्ष्य के साथ लड़ाई को पार कर सकता हूं, उतना ही बेहतर होगा कि मैं दूसरों का अगुवाई करूं और दुश्मन का सामना कर सकूं। या शायद इसका उलटा होता है: मैं दूसरों का अगुवाई करने और दुश्मन का सामना करने में जितना बेहतर होगा, मेरे लिए परमेश्वर के लक्ष्य के बारे में मेरी असुरक्षा या संदेह को दूर करना उतना ही आसान होगा। किसी भी मामले में, हमें इन लड़ाइयों के लिए तैयार रहना चाहिए और विश्वास के साथ उनका सामना करना चाहिए। जैसा कि हम विरोध का सामना करते हैं, जैसा कि नहेमायाह ने कहा, याद रखने के लिए एक महत्वपूर्ण सिद्धांत है: अपने जीवन में परमेश्वर की आस्था को कभी मत भूलना। नहेमायाह ने त्रासदी की सूचना दी (v.17), लेकिन उन्होंने नेताओं को जल्दी से सूचित किया कि कैसे परमेश्वर ने उन्हें उस बिंदु तक सफल बनाया (v.18)। मेरी पत्नी ने मुझे इस बात की याद दिलाई है कि यह किसी से भी अधिक है। वह कहती है, "ज़रूर, हम संघर्ष करने जा रहे हैं। ज़रूर, हमें बीमारी होगी। ज़रूर, हम अपने बच्चों को देखने जा रहे हैं, हम कुछ ऐसी चीजें करेंगे जो हम चाहते हैं कि वे नहीं करेंगे, लेकिन हमें पीछे मुड़कर अच्छे को याद रखना चाहिए। हमारे जीवन में परमेश्वर का हाथ है और विश्वास में आगे बढ़ो।”
