GOD LOOKS AT THE HEART, NOT THE WALLET
GOD LOOKS AT THE HEART, NOT THE WALLET
Main Scripture: 1 Samuel 16:7
“People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”
Introduction
Church, today I want to share something very simple but very important:
Money does not tell us whether a person is spiritual or not.
Money is like clothing.
Clothes can tell us something about what we are wearing, but clothes cannot tell us what is inside our heart.
In the same way, money can tell us something about our financial condition, but money cannot tell us the spiritual condition of our heart.
Only God truly knows the heart.
1. PEOPLE LOOK AT THE OUTSIDE, BUT GOD LOOKS INSIDE
When Samuel came to choose the next king of Israel, he looked at the appearance of Jesse's sons.
But God told him:
“The LORD looks at the heart.”
Samuel was looking at what his eyes could see.
God was looking at what human eyes could not see.
Today, we can make the same mistake.
Then we say, “This person must be blessed.”
Or we see someone struggling financially and think, “Maybe this person is not spiritual.”
But we don't know the heart.
Only God knows the heart.
2. MONEY IS NOT THE MEASURE OF SPIRITUALITY
The Bible does not teach that having money automatically makes someone worldly.
Neither does poverty automatically make someone spiritual.
The real question is:
“What is the position of money in your heart?”
Do you possess money, or does money possess you?
Can you use money to help people?
Can you give without seeking praise?
Can you build a business honestly?
Can you take care of your family?
Can you support God's work?
Can you remain humble when God increases your income?
That is where the heart is revealed.
3. JESUS DID NOT SAY MONEY IS EVIL
The Bible says in 1 Timothy 6:10 that the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.
Notice the difference:
It does not say money itself is the root.
The problem is the love of money.
Money can be used for good or evil.
A knife can cut bread or hurt someone.
The problem is not always the tool—the question is how the tool is used.
Money can feed a hungry family.
Money can help a child go to school.
Money can support ministry.
Money can create employment.
Money can help someone rebuild their life.
So we should not worship money, but neither should we automatically condemn people who have money.
Money is a servant; it must never become our master.
4. YOUR HEART WILL REVEAL WHO YOU REALLY ARE
You can wear beautiful clothes, but clothes cannot make you holy.
You can speak spiritual words, but words alone cannot make you spiritual.
You can sit in church every Sunday, but sitting in church does not automatically transform the heart.
Jesus said in Matthew 12:34:
“For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”
Eventually, the heart speaks.
When pressure comes, the heart speaks.
When money comes, the heart speaks.
When someone insults us, the heart speaks.
When nobody is watching, the heart speaks.
When we receive more than we expected, the heart speaks.
Our real spirituality is revealed not merely by what we display, but by what lives inside us.
5. GOD IS MORE INTERESTED IN YOUR HEART THAN YOUR APPEARANCE
You can impress people with appearance.
But you cannot impress God with appearance.
God is not asking:
“How expensive are your clothes?”
He is asking:
“How is your heart?”
Is your heart full of love?
Is your heart forgiving?
Is your heart humble?
Is your heart honest?
Is your heart generous?
Is your heart faithful?
Is your heart willing to obey God?
That is what God sees.
6. WHEN GOD BLESSES YOU, DON'T LET THE BLESSING BECOME YOUR GOD
There is nothing wrong with asking God to prosper your work.
There is nothing wrong with building a business.
There is nothing wrong with improving your house.
There is nothing wrong with wanting to provide better for your family.
But we must remember:
The blessing should never replace the Blesser.
If God gives you money, thank Him.
If God gives you little, remain faithful.
If God gives you much, remain humble.
If God gives you influence, serve others.
If God gives you opportunity, use it responsibly.
Because one day everything we have will pass away, but the condition of our heart before God matters eternally.
Conclusion: Check Your Heart
Church, don't measure yourself by somebody else's wallet.
And don't measure somebody else's spirituality by their wallet.
Don't say:
“He has money, therefore he must be worldly.”
And don't say:
“He has little money, therefore he must be spiritual.”
We are not God. We cannot see the heart.
Instead, let us ask ourselves:
“Lord, what is inside my heart?”
If I have money, am I still humble?
If I have little, am I still thankful?
If I succeed, do I remember God?
If I fail, do I still trust God?
If someone has more than me, can I rejoice for them?
If someone has less than me, can I help them?
That is where our faith becomes real.
Final Statement
Your heart tells the story.
And ultimately, God is the One who sees that heart.
