Lakadong
For Ziro, Arunachal Pradesh, the climate is well suited to Lakadong turmeric because of the cool temperatures and good monsoon rainfall. The key is to ensure excellent drainage, as turmeric does not tolerate waterlogging.
Month-by-month cultivation calendar
| Month | Activity |
|---|---|
| January | Harvest mature turmeric planted the previous year. Clean, grade, and cure the rhizomes. Select healthy rhizomes for seed. |
| February | Prepare land. Incorporate 8–10 tonnes of well-decomposed farmyard manure (FYM) or compost per acre. Form raised beds or ridges to improve drainage. |
| March | Arrange quality Lakadong seed rhizomes. Treat seed with a recommended biological fungicide (such as Trichoderma) before planting. |
| April | Best planting time. Plant seed rhizomes 5–7 cm deep at a spacing of 45 cm × 30 cm. Apply mulch immediately after planting. |
| May | Crop emergence. Fill gaps where necessary. Keep the field weed-free. |
| June | Monsoon begins. Carry out the first earthing-up if needed. Ensure drainage channels remain open. Apply additional organic manure or vermicompost if available. |
| July | Vigorous vegetative growth. Remove weeds and monitor for leaf spot or rhizome rot. Avoid standing water. |
| August | Apply a top dressing (organic manure or fertilizer, based on soil test if available). Maintain mulch and drainage. |
| September | Continue disease and pest monitoring. Irrigation is usually unnecessary unless there is an unusual dry spell. |
| October | Rhizomes enlarge rapidly. Remove weeds and keep the field clean. |
| November | Leaves begin to yellow naturally. Reduce irrigation if you're irrigating. |
| December | Harvest early-maturing plants if ready. Prepare tools and storage for the main harvest. |
Fertilizer (organic approach)
FYM/Compost: 8–10 tonnes per acre before planting.
Vermicompost: 1–2 tonnes per acre if available.
Mulch with dry leaves or straw after planting to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
Harvest
Harvest 8–9 months after planting, when 70–80% of the leaves have turned yellow and dried.
My recommendations for Ziro
Plant on raised beds (20–30 cm high).
Use mulch to conserve moisture and reduce weeds.
Avoid waterlogging during the monsoon.
Rotate with legumes or another non-ginger-family crop after harvest to reduce disease buildup.
If possible, have your soil tested before planting to guide nutrient management.
With good management, Lakadong turmeric can become a valuable cash crop in Ziro, especially if you market it based on its high curcumin content.
For Lakadong (high-curcumin) turmeric, the soil should be deeper than for garlic, because the rhizomes develop below the surface and need plenty of loose soil.
Soil depth requirements
✅ Ideal soil depth: 30–45 cm (12–18 inches)
✅ Minimum soil depth: 25 cm (10 inches)
Planting depth
Plant seed rhizomes 5–7 cm (2–3 inches) deep.
Best soil for Lakadong turmeric
Soil type: Sandy loam or loam
pH: 5.5–6.5
Rich in organic matter
Excellent drainage (waterlogging can cause rhizome rot)
Raised beds for Ziro
Since Ziro has heavy monsoon rainfall, I recommend:
Raised beds: 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) high
Bed width: 1–1.2 m
Leave 30–40 cm drainage channels between beds.
Spacing
45 cm × 30 cm between plants is a common recommendation for good growth and yield.
My advice for Ziro
To maximize both yield and curcumin content:
Add well-decomposed farmyard manure or compost before planting.
Mulch after planting to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
Keep the field well drained, especially during the monsoon.
With 30–45 cm of loose, fertile soil and proper drainage, Lakadong turmeric has an excellent chance of producing healthy rhizomes in Ziro.
