GOSSIPING
The Bible strongly warns against gossiping and teaches that it is harmful, divisive, and unwise. Here are some key biblical teachings on gossip:
1. Gossip Destroys Relationships
- Proverbs 16:28 – “A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends.”
- Proverbs 17:9 – “Whoever would foster love covers over an offense, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.”
2. God Condemns Gossiping
- Romans 1:29-30 – Gossip is listed among sins like envy, murder, and malice.
- Proverbs 6:16-19 – Among the seven things God hates is “one who sows discord among brothers.”
3. Gossip Reflects a Corrupt Heart
- Luke 6:45 – “The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil; for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”
- James 3:5-6 – The tongue is like a fire, capable of great destruction.
4. Avoid Gossip and Speak Wisely
- Ephesians 4:29 – “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”
- Proverbs 21:23 – “Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble.”
5. Encouragement to Correct, Not Spread
Instead of gossiping, the Bible encourages believers to:
- Matthew 18:15 – Speak directly to the person if there is an issue.
- Galatians 6:1 – Correct others in a spirit of gentleness, not slander.
Conclusion
Gossip is destructive and condemned in the Bible. Instead, Christians are called to use their words to encourage, build up, and promote peace rather than tear others down.
