WHAT IS MONEY
The Bible speaks a lot about money, its proper use, and the dangers of loving it too much. Here are the key biblical teachings about money:
1. Money is Not Evil, But the Love of Money is Dangerous
📖 1 Timothy 6:10 – "For the love of money is the root of all evil."
- Money itself is neutral; it can be used for good or evil.
- The love of money (greed) leads people to sin, dishonesty, and selfishness.
- Lesson: Money is a tool, but it should not control our hearts.
🔹 Example: Judas betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver (Matthew 26:14-16).
2. God Gives the Ability to Earn Wealth
📖 Deuteronomy 8:18 – "Remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth."
- God blesses people with skills and opportunities to earn money.
- Lesson: Wealth is not bad, but we must remember that God is the source.
🔹 Example: Abraham was very rich, but he still trusted and obeyed God (Genesis 13:2).
3. Money Should Be Earned Honestly
📖 Proverbs 13:11 – "Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it."
- Hard work and honest business lead to lasting wealth.
- Quick money schemes, corruption, or dishonesty lead to failure.
🔹 Example: Zacchaeus, the tax collector, repented and returned money he took unfairly (Luke 19:8).
4. Be Wise in Managing Money
📖 Proverbs 21:5 – "The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty."
- Save, invest, and spend wisely.
- Avoid wasting money on things that do not bring value.
🔹 Example: Joseph in Egypt stored grain during good times to prepare for famine (Genesis 41:48-49).
5. Give Generously and Help Others
📖 Proverbs 19:17 – "Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and He will reward them for what they have done."
- God blesses those who give to the poor and support His work.
- Giving does not decrease wealth; it brings blessings.
🔹 Example: The early church shared their wealth so that no one was in need (Acts 4:34-35).
6. Do Not Trust Money More Than God
📖 Matthew 6:24 – "You cannot serve both God and money."
- Money can become an idol if we depend on it more than God.
- True security comes from God, not wealth.
🔹 Example: The rich young ruler refused to follow Jesus because he loved his wealth too much (Mark 10:17-22).
7. Avoid Debt and Financial Slavery
📖 Proverbs 22:7 – "The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender."
- Debt causes stress and limits freedom.
- It’s better to live within your means and save.
🔹 Example: The widow in 2 Kings 4:1-7 was in debt, but God provided a way to pay it off through her small jar of oil.
Conclusion:
- Money is a tool that can be used for good or evil.
- Be honest, work hard, give generously, and trust God.
- Final Question: How do you handle money—as a tool to glorify God or as something to control you?
