Remembering God as the Giver of Wealth

Remembering God as the Giver of Wealth

Introduction

Many people work hard to achieve success, whether in business, ministry, or personal life. But in the pursuit of wealth and provision, there is a danger of forgetting the true source of all blessings—God. Deuteronomy 8:18 reminds us that it is God who gives us the ability to produce wealth, and our prosperity should always be tied to His purpose.

1. Wealth is a Gift from God, Not Just Human Effort

The world often teaches that success comes only from hard work, intelligence, and strategy. While these are important, the Bible teaches that ultimately, God is the one who gives us the ability to create wealth.

Application:

  • Acknowledge that your skills, opportunities, and success come from God.
  • Give thanks to Him daily for His provision.
  • Avoid pride—wealth is not just the result of your work, but of God’s blessing.

Example: Solomon was the wealthiest king of his time, but when he asked for wisdom instead of riches, God gave him both (1 Kings 3:5-13). His success was a result of divine favor, not just personal ability.

2. Wealth Has a Purpose—To Confirm God’s Covenant

God does not bless us just so we can live in luxury. Wealth is meant to serve His purposes, including supporting His kingdom, helping the needy, and fulfilling His covenant promises.

Application:

  • Use your business, income, and resources to advance God’s work.
  • Tithe and give generously, knowing that your wealth is part of God’s bigger plan.
  • Seek God’s wisdom in how you manage and invest what He has given you.

Example: Abraham was blessed abundantly, but his wealth was tied to God’s covenant—to be a blessing to many nations (Genesis 12:2-3). Likewise, our blessings should extend beyond ourselves.

3. The Danger of Forgetting God

In the previous verses (Deuteronomy 8:11-17), God warns Israel not to become proud and forget Him after they enter the Promised Land and prosper. Prosperity can lead to spiritual complacency if we are not careful.

Application:

  • Regularly examine your heart—are you trusting in wealth or in God?
  • Stay humble and dependent on Him, no matter how successful you become.
  • Use every opportunity to glorify God, rather than boasting in personal achievements.

Example: The rich fool in Luke 12:16-21 stored up wealth for himself but did not acknowledge God. His life was taken that night, and his wealth meant nothing. True security comes only from a life centered on God.

Conclusion

Deuteronomy 8:18 teaches us an important truth: wealth and success come from God, and they should be used for His purposes. As we build businesses, careers, and ministries, let us never forget that God is the source of our ability.

Call to Action:

  • Take time to thank God for the opportunities and resources He has given you.
  • Commit to using your wealth to support His work and bless others.
  • Stay humble and remember that success without God is meaningless.

May we always honor God with our wealth and trust Him as our provider. Amen.
