A- The Ministry of the Holy Spirit Before Pentecost 

(Judges 14:5,6)

“And the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him” (v.6). Samson was a spiritual enigma. Before his birth he was chosen of God to be a “Nazirite to God” (Judges 13:1-5). A Nazirite could be either man or woman, set apart from things of the world for the service of God. Some Nazirites were separated unto God for a short period of time, but Samson was set apart by God for life. In failing to live the life of the Nazirite, he trusted Delilah and revealed to her the secret of his great physical strength (Judges16:16, 17). 

While he slept, with his head in Delilah’s lap, she called for a man to cut his hair. When he awoke, Delilah was saying, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!”  He said, “I will go out as before, at other time, and snake myself free!” Then we come to one of the saddest statements in the Bible- “But he did not know that the Lord had departed from him” (Judges.16:18-21). 

When he lost the power of the Holy Spirit, he lost victory, and the Philistines captured him. Finally, however, the Spirit again came mightily upon him and declared the Philistines (Judges16:29, 30)

            In the Old Testament the Holy Spirit came upon the Lord’s servants, but when they continued to disobey God, the Holy Spirit would leave them. For example, Samuel prophesied to Soul saying, “The Spirit of the Lord will come upon you, and you will prophesy with them [the prophets] and be turned into another man” (1Samuel 10:6-10). But the time came when Soul, in disobedience to God, sinned so greatly that the Holy Spirit departed from him (1Samuel16:14).

            When King David repented of his sin, knowing that the Holy Spirit had abandoned King Soul, he prayed, “Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me” (Psalm 51:11). This psalm of repentance should be read often and when necessary practiced by every believer, lest the Holy Spirit be grieved (1John 1:9). The Holy Spirit not only came upon prophets, kings, judges, and priests in the Old Testament, He also filled some for special work. “Lord spoke to Moses, saying; see, I have called by name Bezalel.... And I have filled him with the Spirit of God” (Exodus 31:1-11). Bezalel was filled with the Spirit of God and given the wisdom, understanding, and knowledge, to be a Spirit-filled craftsman who could supervise the building of the tabernacle, the ark of the covenant, and all the furniture, and who could make all the clothes for the high priest and  his sons (Exodus 35:31-36:7). The Holy Spirit came upon many, but only filled a few; the great outpouring of the Holy Spirit, however, took place at Pentecost.

पुराने नियम में पवित्र आत्मा प्रभु के सेवकों पर आया था, लेकिन जब उन्होंने परमेश्वर की अवज्ञा करना जारी रखा, तो पवित्र आत्मा उन्हें छोड़ दिया । उदाहरण के लिए, शमूएल ने आत्मा की भविष्यवाणी करते हुए कहा, "परमेश्वर की आत्मा तुम पर आएगी, और तुम उनके साथ [भविष्यद्वक्ताओं] भविष्यवाणी करोगे और दूसरे मनुष्य में बदल जाओगे" (1 शमूएल 10: 6-10) । लेकिन वह समय आया जब सोल, परमेश्वर की अवज्ञा में, इतना पाप किया कि पवित्र आत्मा उससे दूर हो गया (1 शमूएल 16:14) ।

जब दाऊद राजा ने अपने पाप का पश्चाताप किया, तो यह जानकर कि पवित्र आत्मा ने सोल राजा को त्याग दिया है, उसने प्रार्थना की, "मुझे अपनी उपस्थिति से मत निकालो, और अपने पवित्र आत्मा को मुझसे अलग न कर" (भजन 51:11) । पश्चाताप की इस भजन को अक्सर पढ़ा जाना चाहिए और जब आवश्यक हो तो प्रत्येक आस्तिक द्वारा अभ्यास किया जाए, ऐसा न हो कि पवित्र आत्मा को दुखित हो (1यूहन्ना 1:9) । पवित्र आत्मा न केवल पैगंबर, राजाओं, न्यायाधीशों और यजककों के पुराने नियम में आया था, उसने विशेष कार्य के लिए कुछ भरा भी था। “यहोवा ने मूसा से कहा,“ देखो, मैंने बेज़ेलेल नाम से पुकारा है .... और मैंने उसे परमेश्वर की आत्मा से भर दिया है '' (निर्गमन 31:1-11) । बेज़ेलेल को परमेश्वर की आत्मा से भर दिया गया था और ज्ञान, समझ और ज्ञान दिया गया था, एक आत्मा से भरा हुआ शिल्पकार था जो कि भवन के रचना, वाचा के सन्दूक और सभी सज्जा का पर्यवेक्षण कर सकता था, और जो सभी को दे सकते थे महायाजक और उसके पुत्रों के लिए वस्त्र (निर्गमन 35:31-36) । पवित्र आत्मा कई पर आया, लेकिन केवल कुछ ही भरा; हालाँकि, पवित्र आत्मा की महान मदद, पिन्तेकुस्त में हुई।
