Time and Labour – God’s Gift and Our Responsibility
Time and Labour – God’s Gift and Our Responsibility
Main Text:
Ecclesiastes 3:1
"To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven."
1. Time Is a Gift from God
Every person on earth receives the same amount of time each day—24 hours.
The rich cannot buy more time. The poor cannot borrow tomorrow. Time is God’s gift and God’s test.
Psalm 90:12 says:
"Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom."
When we understand time correctly, we become wise.
Many people pray for blessings, but they waste the time that produces those blessings.
God gives:
Time
Opportunities
Seasons
But it is our responsibility to use them wisely.
2. Labour Is God’s Design for Humanity
Work was not created after sin. Work existed before the fall.
Genesis 2:15 says:
"Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it."
Adam was placed in the garden to work.
This teaches us:
Labour is not punishment.
Labour is purpose.
God designed humans to:
Build
Create
Manage
Produce
A life without labour leads to:
Frustration
Poverty
Loss of purpose
But labour with God brings fruitfulness.
3. Time Without Labour Produces Nothing
A farmer may have land, rain, and seeds.
But if he does not labour, there will be no harvest.
Proverbs 14:23 says:
"In all labour there is profit, but idle chatter leads only to poverty."
This means:
Talking does not produce results
Dreaming alone does not produce results
Complaining does not produce results
Labour produces results.
God blesses the work of our hands.
Deuteronomy 28:12 says:
"The Lord will bless all the work of your hands."
Notice: God blesses work, not laziness.
4. Labour Must Be Done at the Right Time
Timing is very important in God’s kingdom.
Ecclesiastes 3 teaches us:
A time to plant
A time to harvest
A time to build
A time to gather
A farmer who plants at the wrong season will struggle.
Likewise in life:
If we waste our youth, we regret later
If we delay obedience, we miss opportunities
If we postpone labour, we lose harvest
Time lost cannot be recovered.
Jesus Himself understood urgency.
John 9:4 says:
"I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work."
Jesus knew there was a limited time to fulfill His mission.
5. God Rewards Faithful Labour
God does not forget our labour.
Hebrews 6:10 says:
"For God is not unjust to forget your work and labour of love."
Sometimes people feel discouraged:
“My work is not seen.”
“My effort is wasted.”
“No one appreciates what I do.”
But God sees everything.
Every:
prayer
service
sacrifice
faithful work
God records it.
And in due season, He rewards.
Galatians 6:9 says:
"Let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart."
6. Balance Between Labour and Rest
God also teaches rest.
Even God rested on the seventh day.
This teaches a principle:
Life must have:
Work
Rest
Worship
Without rest:
the body becomes weak
the mind becomes tired
the spirit becomes dry
So we must manage time wisely.
Conclusion
Time and labour are two powerful gifts from God.
Time gives opportunity.
Labour produces harvest.
If we use time wisely and work faithfully:
God will bring:
fruitfulness
provision
fulfillment
But if we waste time and avoid labour, life becomes empty.
Final Challenge to the Church
Ask yourself:
Am I using my time wisely?
Am I faithful in the work God gave me?
Am I preparing for the harvest God promised?
Let us commit today:
To value time.
To labour faithfully.
To serve God with diligence.
Because one day we will stand before God, and He will say:
"Well done, good and faithful servant."
