Psalm 23:5

Psalm 23:5

"You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup overflows."

Introduction

  • Psalm 23 is one of the most beloved Psalms, a picture of God as our Shepherd, Provider, Protector, and Host.

  • In verse 5, David shifts imagery from a shepherd to a generous host. God not only leads us but also honors us in the face of adversity.

  • This verse teaches us about God’s provision, protection, anointing, and abundance.

1. God’s Provision – “You prepare a table before me”

  • In biblical times, preparing a table was the act of a gracious host ensuring his guest is satisfied and honored.

  • God Himself takes the role of a host, not just giving crumbs, but a banquet of blessings.

  • This shows intentional care — the table is prepared before you arrive.

  • Application: You don’t need to worry about tomorrow; God has already prepared what you need (Phil. 4:19).

2. God’s Protection – “In the presence of my enemies”

  • Notice: the table is not in a safe place, but right in the presence of enemies.

  • This means enemies may see, but they cannot stop what God is doing.

  • Like Joseph in Egypt: brothers meant evil, but God turned it for good.

  • Application: Even when surrounded by opposition, we can eat in peace because our Shepherd is guarding us.

3. God’s Anointing – “You anoint my head with oil”

  • Anointing with oil in ancient culture meant being welcomed, refreshed, and set apart.

  • Spiritually, this points to the Holy Spirit’s presence, empowerment, and healing.

  • Oil on the head of a sheep also protected it from insects and wounds. God covers us to protect from irritation and harm.

  • Application: The Lord sets His seal of favor upon you. You are chosen, not forsaken.

4. God’s Abundance – “My cup overflows”

  • An overflowing cup means more than enough, blessings beyond measure.

  • Not survival, but abundance — God doesn’t give sparingly.

  • Jesus said, “I came that they may have life, and have it more abundantly” (John 10:10).

  • Application: Don’t live with a scarcity mindset. In Christ, your portion is overflowing joy, peace, and eternal hope.

Conclusion

  • Psalm 23:5 assures us: God provides, protects, anoints, and blesses abundantly.

  • Even when enemies are near, God is greater.

  • Our response should be faith and gratitude: trusting His table, receiving His anointing, and rejoicing in His overflowing cup.

  • Come to the Shepherd’s table. He has already prepared it for you.

📖 Key Takeaway:
When the Lord is your Shepherd, you don’t just survive—you sit at His table, anointed, overflowing, and victorious even in the presence of your enemies.
