SAMSON

Samson was a Nazirite, meaning he was dedicated to God from birth under the Nazirite vow (Numbers 6:1-21). His story is found in Judges 13–16.

Key Aspects of Samson's Life

  1. Miraculous Birth & Nazirite Vow

    • An angel appeared to his mother, declaring that he would deliver Israel from the Philistines (Judges 13:3-5).
    • As a Nazirite, he was forbidden from:
      • Drinking wine or strong drink
      • Cutting his hair
      • Touching anything dead
  2. Supernatural Strength

    • Samson’s strength was from God, not just his hair (Judges 16:17).
    • He killed a lion with his bare hands (Judges 14:6).
    • He struck down 1,000 Philistines with a donkey’s jawbone (Judges 15:15).
  3. His Weakness: Delilah’s Betrayal

    • The Philistines bribed Delilah to discover his secret (Judges 16:4-5).
    • She tricked him into revealing that his strength was tied to his uncut hair.
    • After cutting his hair, he lost his strength and was captured and blinded (Judges 16:19-21).
  4. His Redemption & Death

    • While in prison, his hair began to grow back, symbolizing his restored relationship with God.
    • In his final act, he prayed for strength and pulled down the Philistine temple, killing more enemies in death than in life (Judges 16:28-30).

Lessons from Samson’s Life

  • God can use flawed people for His purpose.
  • Compromise leads to downfall (his weakness for Philistine women).
  • God restores those who repent (even after failure, Samson fulfilled his mission).
