From Fear to Faith: Meeting the Risen Lord

 “From Fear to Faith: Meeting the Risen Lord”

John 20:19–31I

Introduction

The resurrection of Jesus changes everything.

In John 20:19–31, we see disciples move from:

Fear to boldness

Doubt to belief

Confusion to purpose

This passage shows what happens when Jesus steps into our locked rooms and closed hearts.

I. JESUS ENTERS OUR FEAR (vv. 19–20)

A. The disciples were hiding behind locked doors

Fear of persecution

Fear of the Jews

Fear of the unknown

Fear can lock us in:

Fear of failure

Fear of tomorrow

Fear of people

Fear of past mistakes

B. Jesus comes through the locked door

He does not wait for us to come out —

He comes in.

C. His first words: “Peace be unto you.”

Not judgement.

Not anger.

But **peace**.

D. He shows His hands and His side**

* Proof of His victory

* Proof of His love

* Proof of His resurrection

**Result:** “The disciples were glad.”

Jesus replaces fear with joy.

II. JESUS GIVES US A PURPOSE (vv. 21–23)**

“As the Father hath sent me, even so send I you.”

Jesus gives:

* **Peace** → for troubled hearts

* **Purpose** → for meaningful living

* **Power** → through the Holy Spirit

### **He breathes on them**

This symbolizes:

* New creation

* New mission

* New authority

We are not saved just to sit;

we are saved to be **sent.**

III. JESUS MEETS OUR DOUBTS (vv. 24–29)**

A. Thomas missed the first meeting

When we separate from the fellowship, we often miss revelation.

B. Thomas demanded proof

Not rebellion —

wounded faith.

Sometimes pain creates doubt.

C. Eight days later Jesus returns

And He comes specifically for Thomas.

D. Jesus invites Thomas to touch His wounds

This shows:

* Jesus is gentle with doubters

* Jesus knows our struggles

* Jesus comes close to the broken-hearted

E. Thomas’ confession

“My Lord and my God.”

This is the highest declaration of Jesus’ deity in the Gospels.

F. Jesus blesses future believers

“Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.”

That blessing is for you.

IV. THE PURPOSE OF THE GOSPEL (vv. 30–31)

John concludes:

* Jesus did many signs

* But these are written for one purpose:

“That ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God…”

Not just know believe.

“…and that believing ye might have life through His name.”

Real life.

Eternal life.

Abundant life.

The resurrection is not just a story —

it is an invitation to life.

CONCLUSION

Jesus still steps into:

* Our locked rooms

* Our fears

* Our doubts

* Our emptiness

And He still says:

**“Peace be unto you.”**

He still calls us:

**“As the Father sent Me, so I send you.”**

He still blesses us:

**“Blessed are those who believe.”**

# **CALL TO ACTION**

1. **Open your heart** and let Jesus speak peace into your fear.

2. **Accept His mission** — you are sent to your family, your village, your workplace.

3. **Surrender your doubts** — Jesus understands and meets you where you are.

4. **Believe and live** — true life is in the name of Jesus.
