Psalm 133 is a short but deeply meaningful psalm attributed to David. It focuses on the beauty and blessing of unity among God's people.

Here is the psalm (ESV), followed by a verse-by-verse explanation:

Psalm 133 (ESV)

A Song of Ascents. Of David.

  1. Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!

  2. It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes!

  3. It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life forevermore.

Verse-by-Verse Explanation:

Verse 1:

“Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!”

  • “Behold” – A call to attention, urging the listener to reflect on something important.

  • “Good and pleasant” – Unity is not only morally good (in God’s eyes) but also emotionally pleasant (in human experience).

  • “Brothers dwell in unity” – While it can mean literal siblings, it broadly refers to God's people (especially Israel) living in peace, harmony, and shared purpose.

Verse 2:

“It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes!”

  • David compares unity to the anointing oil used to consecrate priests—specifically Aaron, the first high priest (Exodus 30:22–33).

  • Oil on the head...beard...robes – Symbolizes abundance and sacred purpose. Unity isn’t just functional; it is spiritual, rich, and holy.

  • The anointing oil was fragrant and valuable, symbolizing God's blessing, presence, and appointment for ministry.

Verse 3:

“It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life forevermore.”

  • Mount Hermon is a tall, snow-capped mountain in the north, known for its abundant dew—essential for agriculture in dry climates.

  • Dew is a symbol of refreshing, life-giving blessing.

  • David says unity is like that: nourishing and sustaining.

  • Though Hermon is far from Zion (Jerusalem), the imagery bridges geography to show how God's refreshing presence flows wherever His people live in unity.

  • “The Lord has commanded the blessing, life forevermore” – God's blessing is not accidental; it’s promised and guaranteed where unity exists. That blessing includes eternal life—both spiritual and communal.

Summary:

Psalm 133 is a celebration of godly unity—something both beautiful and powerful. David likens it to sacred anointing oil (symbolizing holiness and calling) and life-giving dew (symbolizing refreshment and blessing). Ultimately, unity among God's people is where eternal blessings are found.
