Can There Be "Jesus Yoga"?

Key Verse: 2 Corinthians 6:14 – “Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?”

Some people try to combine yoga with Christianity, calling it "Jesus Yoga" or "Christian Yoga." However, this is problematic because yoga’s foundations are deeply rooted in Hinduism and Eastern spirituality. Let’s examine why “Jesus Yoga” is not a biblical practice.

1. Yoga’s Spiritual Roots Cannot Be Separated

Exodus 20:3 – “You shall have no other gods before Me.”

  • Yoga was created as a Hindu practice to unite with the “divine” within.
  • Many yoga postures are dedicated to Hindu gods, and the breathing techniques are meant to control spiritual energy (prana), which is not biblical.
  • You cannot remove the spiritual foundation of yoga and still call it “Christian.”

Example:

  • Saying “Jesus Yoga” is like saying “Christian Astrology” or “Christian Witchcraft.” You cannot mix biblical faith with pagan practices (Deuteronomy 18:10-12).

Application:

  • Instead of Christianizing yoga, focus on biblical spiritual disciplines like prayer, worship, and Scripture meditation.

2. True Peace Comes from Jesus, Not Yoga Practices

John 14:27 – “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you.”

  • Yoga teaches that peace and enlightenment come from within, but the Bible teaches that peace comes only from Jesus.
  • Biblical meditation fills the mind with God’s Word, while Eastern meditation focuses on emptying the mind, which can lead to deception.

Example:

  • Jesus never practiced or taught yoga. Instead, He spent time in prayer and communion with the Father (Mark 1:35).

Application:

  • Replace yoga with prayerful meditation on Scripture (Psalm 1:2).

3. “Jesus Yoga” Can Open Doors to Spiritual Deception

1 Timothy 4:1 – “Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons.”

  • Many people start yoga for exercise but slowly get drawn into New Age or Hindu spiritual practices.
  • Even if someone replaces Hindu chants with Bible verses, the spiritual roots and purpose of yoga remain the same.

Example:

  • The kundalini spirit in yoga is said to be “spiritual awakening,” but it is actually a demonic counterfeit of the Holy Spirit.
  • Many who practice deep yoga experience strange energy surges, trance states, and supernatural experiences—none of which align with biblical Christianity.

Application:

  • Avoid practices that mix Christianity with other religions (Deuteronomy 12:30-31).

What Should Christians Do Instead?

  1. Engage in God-honoring Physical Exercise – Choose workouts that focus on fitness without spiritual compromise (1 Timothy 4:8).
  2. Meditate on God’s Word, Not Eastern Techniques – Biblical meditation means dwelling on Scripture, not emptying the mind (Joshua 1:8).
  3. Find Peace in Christ, Not in Yoga – True peace and spiritual renewal come through prayer and the Holy Spirit (Philippians 4:7).

Conclusion

  • Jesus and yoga cannot be mixed—Christianity and Hindu spirituality are incompatible.
  • True peace, healing, and transformation come from Jesus, not yoga techniques.
  • Instead of practicing "Jesus Yoga," believers should focus on prayer, worship, and biblical meditation.

Final Prayer:

“Lord, help us seek You alone for peace, strength, and spiritual growth. Keep us from practices that mix truth with deception. Teach us to meditate on Your Word and trust in Your Spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
