He Who Has an Ear, Let Him Hear

"He Who Has an Ear, Let Him Hear"

 **Scripture Reading:** Revelation 2:7, 2:11, 2:17, 2:29, 3:6, 3:13, 3:22

**Introduction:**

Good morning, church! Today, we delve into a powerful and recurring phrase from the Book of Revelation: "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches." This phrase appears seven times in the second and third chapters of Revelation, signifying its profound importance. Let us open our hearts and minds to understand and embrace the message that the Holy Spirit is imparting to us today.

**Understanding the Context:**

The Book of Revelation, written by the apostle John, conveys visions and messages from Jesus Christ. In chapters 2 and 3, specific messages are directed to seven churches in Asia Minor. These churches were facing various challenges and were in need of guidance, correction, and encouragement.

The phrase "He who has an ear, let him hear" is a call to attention, urging believers to listen and respond to the spiritual insights and instructions provided. This call is not just for the ancient churches but extends to us today, as we navigate our own spiritual journeys.

**Messages to the Seven Churches:**

1. **Ephesus (Revelation 2:7):**

"To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God."

The church in Ephesus is commended for its hard work and perseverance but is admonished for losing its first love.

Imagine a couple who, after many years of marriage, have become so busy with their daily routines that they've lost the spark they once had. Similarly, we might be diligent in our church activities yet lose our passion for Christ. We must rekindle our love and passion for Christ.

2. **Smyrna (Revelation 2:11):**

"The one who is victorious will not be hurt at all by the second death."

The church in Smyrna faces severe persecution. Jesus encourages them to remain faithful, even unto death, promising eternal life beyond the trials.

Consider Christians in regions where practicing their faith can lead to imprisonment or death. Their unwavering faith despite the dangers reminds us to remain steadfast in our trials, knowing that our ultimate reward is eternal.

3. **Pergamum (Revelation 2:17):**

"To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it."

Pergamum is praised for holding fast to Christ's name but is warned against false teachings.

Picture a student who, despite peer pressure, refuses to cheat on an exam. Similarly, we must discern truth from falsehood and hold firmly to our faith even when faced with societal pressures to compromise.

4. **Thyatira (Revelation 2:29):**

"He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."

Thyatira is recognized for its love, faith, and service but is chastised for tolerating immorality.

Think of a community leader who does great works but turns a blind eye to corruption within their team. We are reminded to uphold purity and righteousness in our lives, addressing sin and wrongdoing instead of ignoring them.

5. **Sardis (Revelation 3:6):**

"He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."

The church in Sardis is called out for being spiritually dead despite its reputation for being alive.

A business might appear successful outwardly but is on the verge of bankruptcy due to internal issues. This is a wake-up call for us to revive our spiritual fervor and commitment, ensuring our inner spiritual health matches our outward appearances.

6. **Philadelphia (Revelation 3:13):**

"He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."

Philadelphia is commended for its faithfulness despite having little strength. Jesus promises to keep them from the hour of trial.

Consider a small church that, despite limited resources, continues to serve its community faithfully. We are encouraged to persevere and trust in God's protection and provision, no matter how small or weak we might feel.

7. **Laodicea (Revelation 3:22):**

"He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."

Laodicea is rebuked for being lukewarm, neither hot nor cold. Jesus urges them to repent and become zealous.

Imagine a worker who does just enough to get by, neither excelling nor failing. This challenges us to examine our own spiritual temperature and strive for wholehearted devotion rather than settling for mediocrity.

**Application to Our Lives:**

These messages to the seven churches are deeply relevant to us today. They cover a range of spiritual states and challenges that we, as individuals and as a church community, may face. The recurring exhortation to "hear what the Spirit says" emphasizes the necessity of spiritual attentiveness and responsiveness.

1. **Listening Intently:**

   - **Example:** Just as we would listen attentively to important instructions from a doctor, we must cultivate a habit of listening to God's voice through Scripture, prayer, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Are we truly listening, or are we distracted by the noise of the world?

2. **Responding Faithfully:**

   - **Example:** When we hear a smoke alarm, we don't just acknowledge it; we take action. Similarly, hearing is not enough; we must act on what we hear. This means repenting where we have fallen short, persevering in trials, holding fast to our faith, and rekindling our love for Christ.

3. **Remaining Vigilant:**

   - **Example:** Like a guard who stays alert to protect a city, the spiritual journey requires vigilance. We must guard against complacency, false teachings, and moral compromise. Let us strive to live lives that are pleasing to God, reflecting His love and truth.

**Conclusion:**

As we reflect on the messages to the seven churches, let us take to heart the call to "hear what the Spirit says." May we be a church that listens intently, responds faithfully, and remains vigilant in our walk with Christ. Let us pray for open ears, receptive hearts, and the courage to live out the truths we receive from the Spirit.

**Prayer:**

Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your Word and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Help us to listen intently to what You are saying to us today. Give us the strength to respond faithfully and the vigilance to remain true to Your ways. Revive our hearts, renew our minds, and empower us to live lives that glorify You. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
