THE POWER OF WORDS Proverbs 18:21

Introduction:

Good morning/afternoon, dear friends and members of our congregation. Today, we gather here to explore a powerful message from the Book of Proverbs, chapter 18, verse 21. This verse encapsulates a timeless truth about the impact of our words on our lives and the lives of those around us. Let us delve into the depths of Proverbs 18:21 and uncover its significance for our daily lives.

I. The Weight of Words: Proverbs 18:21 states, "Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits." These words might seem simple, but they carry a profound message about the immense influence our words have. Our tongues hold the power to bring both death and life. Just as a small spark can set a forest ablaze, our words can ignite emotions, change perspectives, and shape destinies.

A. Words Can Bring Death: Negative, hurtful words can wound hearts, shatter relationships, and cause irreparable damage. We've all experienced the pain of thoughtless words or harmful gossip. Proverbs 12:18 reminds us that "reckless words pierce like a sword." The wounds inflicted by hurtful words can last longer than physical scars, affecting self-esteem and emotional well-being.

B. Words Can Bring Life: Conversely, uplifting, encouraging, and kind words have the power to breathe life into weary souls. Proverbs 16:24 tells us, "Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body." A word of affirmation, a comforting message, or a gesture of appreciation can mend broken spirits and inspire positive change.

II. The Choice We Make: The latter part of Proverbs 18:21 states, "those who love it will eat its fruits." This reminds us that the words we choose to speak will come back to us, affecting our own lives as well.

A. Planting Seeds of Kindness: Just as a farmer sows seeds to reap a harvest, we sow the seeds of our words in the lives of others. Galatians 6:7 reminds us that "whatever a man sows, that he will also reap." By choosing to sow words of love, respect, and compassion, we create a culture of positivity around us. This culture then becomes the soil in which our own blessings can grow.

B. Guarding Our Hearts and Tongues: The words we speak are reflections of the condition of our hearts. Proverbs 4:23 urges us to "guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life." When we nurture our hearts with goodness, our words will naturally reflect that goodness. Let us be mindful of what we allow to influence our hearts, so our words remain instruments of life-giving grace.

Conclusion: As we reflect on Proverbs 18:21, let us remember that our words are not just expressions of our thoughts; they are tools that can shape destinies. Let us be cautious of the power our words hold, choosing to speak life rather than death, encouragement instead of discouragement, and love over hatred.

May our tongues be guided by wisdom, humility, and compassion. May we be agents of positive change in our families, communities, and the world at large. And may our commitment to the principles in this verse lead us to experience the abundant fruits of life that come from using our words for good.

Let us go forth from here, seeking opportunities to speak life into every situation and person we encounter. In doing so, we not only honor the wisdom of Proverbs 18:21, but we also honor the One who is the source of all life and love. Amen.
